Pre design work is proper site analysis with regard to geo-physical aspects climatic aspect, environmental aspect and infrastructural aspect. And work on the possible Schedule of Accommodation (SoA) to prepare a detailed architect’s brief outlining functions to be accommodated in the project to make the architecture of the project proper. Considerable inputs from the other agencies like management experts, doctors & surgeons, air-conditioning, electrical, plumbing professionals equipment vendors etc. are required at this stage.

Being Healthcare architecture differs from that of other building types in the complexity of the functional relationships between the various parts of the hospital. The lack of trained professionals in healthcare planning results in many of the hospitals in Bangladesh today ill conceived. A zoning plan in the schematic outline of the project interrelating properly various zones like outpatient areas, inpatient areas, diagnostic areas, invasive and non- invasive treatment areas etc, along with the horizontal or vertical stacking plan and massing of the building or complex are prepared on the basis of the prepared SoA at this stage.

After the conceptual stage, schematic preliminary floor lay-out plans with structural grid, furniture and equipment lay-outs in all rooms and spaces need to be prepared on the concept plan. Proper structural grid, furniture and equipment lay-out in spaces are absolutely vital for a good healthcare facility for there are specific codes, standard practices, strict specifications regarding these and improper planning of the spaces with regard to furniture’s and equipments results in a spatially wasteful and functionally inefficient hospital.

At this stage design development drawings and architectural construction drawings are prepared on the basis of the final schematic drawings involving all the finer details that are absolutely necessary for smooth and pleasant functioning of the hospital.

The structural drawings are prepared too at this stage in conjunction with architectural construction drawing. Structural engineers who are highly conversant with hospital projects are required at this stage as hospital structures have bigger spans and the structural elements have to cater for many service ducts and lines.

The M & E drawings, the most vital drawings for hospitals, are prepared too at this stage in conjunction with architectural and structural construction drawings. The M & E of hospitals are highly specialized involving laminar flow, HEPA filters, specific air change rate, negative pressure zones etc.

Medical supply system drawings are also prepared at this stage to be integrated with the construction drawings by competent professionals.

Fire fighting drawings that are prepared and integrated with the construction drawings are the fire fighting drawings by professionals conversant with NFPA and BNBC.
